Don't know if this is legal, forum rules are very sketchy on what is allowed and not allowed. However, it isn't to sell something or crack a code, it is to create a code to fix a broken system. This will all be pending an official investigation by some local authorities before this will proceed past research and planning.
Anyway, thanks to a fancy new system at my school, I'm losing money. As I don't have money to lose, this really bothers me. You all know of my various attempts to scratch up even the $5 usd to pay for Gold, so you know I haven't the money to lose.
This is all because, starting this year, my school decided to integrate all functions to a central database. The problem, the new database required all new programs to run on it. After the usual retraining problem, where I almost expected to lose money, I kept losing more. Its now been a month now, and I know that they can't be incompetant, so surely it must be the program.
Well, during a simple walk-by of the monitor hosting the program, it turns out I was right. The touch screen program they have is too slow for the new program. Couple that with an impossibly small user interface, and you've now come up with what is commonly known as "the upgrade from Canada".
So, thus my simple request: I require Visual Basic programmers to redesign the user interface. Why VB when C or Java could very well do better? Because VB is the language taught at the school, so it would be easier to get the school board to pass this idea if I used the language I learned from them. Also, VB is very UI-oriented (in fact, dependant on it), and this program will be very UI-oriented. This won't go into effect until after the school board passes the idea, which the next meeting will be in the middle of next month. Until then, the entire project would be in planning, and beginning the work on the UI and simple coding.
This program won't be hard coded (which is fun for all the modders out there, as we all despise hard coded stuff), with everything stored either on the database or in a separate DAT file. In fact, the entire thing will be designed so that future upgrades will be very easy for the sys admin to do (yep, by himself, since I'd consider his knowledge to be the minimal of what is required (the guy's a washout from his college that landed this job because he would accept just slightly over minimum wage)). Of course, it will be password-protected and encrypted, and set for remote access if need be.
If you worry about not having the skill, fear not, I have books! This summer was book buying bonanza for me (well, what else to do with the 50 usd you got for your birthday? Not enough for tech, too much to let around the house (which is full of the usual thieves)), and one of the books focuses on VB.NET and security. Further, several have sections on database interfacing and a few even have information on remote accessing. So, if you'd like to volunteer for something you don't know exactly how to do, I can scan and send the appropriate sections of the book (as typing is too much for me ). However, I'd recommend that you only volunteer for what you know you can do, not what you think you can do.
As VB is OOP (Object-Oriented Programming), what IDE/compiler/editor you use is up to you. So long as it is all compatable in the end, it doesn't matter to me. If you know VB but don't have an IDE and the SDK compiler, follow these links:
SharpDevelop, a VB/C IDE
The .NET SDK, AKA the compiler for .NET. May need updating (old).
Right now, the need for any sort of programmer is great. While this project can very well be done on my own, it is not wise to do so. I need documentors (people who can read code and document on its function), coordinators (people who will setup and maintain a website and forum for this project (using free materials, of course), debuggers (people who can read code for errors and fix them), testers (people who have all day to spend plugging in different numbers to try to "break" the code, and of course, advisors/consultants (I've already mentioned the need for VB programmers, dir! That is why it isn't mentioned here). Anyone who'd like to apply for a position can PM me.
Before I forget, this shouldn't be a problem, but VB.NET only works with Windows XP. If you've an older PC or a MAC and would like to help, we can print and e-mail some source code for you during the debugging phase. Elsewise, you'd be stuck working in consulting/advising, testing (you'd get a compiled version which would run on an older PC), or coordinating the forum and stuff. This is the folly of MS and definately is not fair. I suppose they did this to force people to upgrade to a newer system, because almost nothing has really changed between .NET and 6.0 of any of their programs. Aside from reworking the syntax to look more C++-like, VB.NET is almost identical to 6.0. To those who had their hopes up for programming: sorry, but this is what you get from a monopolist like Bill Gates.
As I said, applicants can PM me. This is a for gratis job, no money will be exchanged, etc. However, this can be something you can put on your resume, if you can contact me (you'd have to e-mail me before you submitted an application, then tell me your real name (so I'd know who they meant by "John Smith") and I'd give you a phone number (US only) to call (International users would have to find out if their employer would pay for an international call, because I won't)). Who else wants to stop a great injustice? |

So what exactly do you want someone to do? (What happened to the short summaries you were gonna put after every post? ) |

Basically, we're rewritting the school lunch program, tying it in with the database, and any other work we'd be called to do (well, the first one is just because I'm angry at the lunch program, the others would be if the school likes the programs so much that they want us to write other programs for them).
As far as the summary goes, here's one:
I'm tired of how the school lunch program is stealing my money. Because of a programming error, as well as UI errors, people will often be charged double or triple for one meal. This money is money of which I don't have, so this bothers me a great bit.
Unfortunately, the entire school runs around one central database, so any programs we'd do would have to tie into this. The funny thing is that they paid thousands of dollars for this system, and it doesn't even work right.
If we go ahead and do this, we'll program in Visual Basic, because it most closely resembles the current program, is taught in school (and thus believable that it was programmed by "ametuer" programmers), and is an easy and quick language to teach and learn from.
The program will run entirely softcoded, with everything modifyable from off-site locations, password protected and encrypted (of course). I then put some links to download VB and the SDK and explained that VB.NET will only work with an XP computer, and everyone with another OS would need to be a tester (of compiled code) or an advisor.
I then listed some information on what is needed for stuff related to the project, and some information on applying. Basically, to apply:
I need your name, years experience with VB/programming, preferred position, and if you want, I can see if I can get this on your resume. In response to an application, I'll send a list of test programs and more information on the project. The test programs will test your abilities in VB, on a basic level. This shows me you have enough of an understanding of VB and are willing to help. |

Can we have a summary of the summary? |

that is how much i can summarise his summary without losing most of the important information |

Whats up with you people cant you read?
I read most of the top one, and skimmed the bottom half. The Summary is easy to read. |
Trying to find old players. Anyone about? Drop me a PM or reply to this thread:

I fear for the future of mankind. We've finally reached the point where "Johnny can't read" meets "Johhny's too lazy", the two great arguments of education for the past 30 years. This is pretty scary stuff, especially since the summary was almost 1/3 of the original post.
Thanks LSF for summarizing for the Johnny's out there. Because molo just showed how lazy they are, molo clearly isn't programming material. I'm guessing he's never had the enjoyment of disecting a program, and finding how it works (mostly because its written, and he hates reading). Well, he needn't apply now, since its evident that you only posted to boost your post count. I could say a lot worse about you molo, since this thread was a request for help, not a joke; but I won't. |
