I have recently bought HL2 and well it doesn't seem to like my intergrated 128mb Graphics card... no suprise there.

So i have decided to do the smart thing and go buy a new one, but i'm not sure what card to get. It needs to be about £180 at the most and be able to run HL2, Battlefield 2 etc...

Oh yea... needs to be PCI-E

Cheers

6800's start at £130 ish. 6800GT was £150 a month or so back. No idea what a decent 'this years card' would cost... apart from probably much more

My standard 6800 runs BF2 no problems. Well except for the fact that its a generally buggy game anyway

Ok I was only looking at the AGP versions but PCI-E aren't much different in price.

Ohhh if u got PCI-E (i envy u ) u can buy the low budget technology that ATi n Nvidia has delivered. For Nvidia is TurboCache and for Ati is HyperMemory, and their prices is very low.

Nvidia TurboCache

ATi Hyper memory

And by the way i have heard that TurboCache is better one because it takes memory from RAM and swap file, and ATi Hyper Memory only takes it from RAM.

Basically if these cards take away chunks of your RAM, you're about as bad off as you were with your integrated card. Had best take a bit lower end card than one that sucks the life out of your RAM.

In that case would it be ideal to buy a extra 512mb RAM, so that i have 1Gb RAM.

I also need to get a external HDD, as i only have a 40Gb HDD and well with all the games i want, i think that i will need another one

Ehmm no not that way, they come with memory integrated and u can configure how much they can get from ur sustem.
From the reviews i have saw, the result (based on their price) of benchmarking in games, are amazing.

you can always get a newer, more expensve card like the 6800 or 7800 but i currently have only a geforce 5200, i can still run HL2 with all the graphics settings on the highest they go and still have no lag at all. the same is true for BF2 and Doom 3:ROE. i personally would say not to go with the newest high-end card, instead get a slightly older one and put the left over money towards more RAM or a faster processor (AMD of course).
well then, cats in the jungle
