Hi all, I'm looking to buy a tft and it would be nice to hear what people think of their screens, good and bad.
Due to:
* My CRT developing annoying moire, resulting in headaches.
* Lan party coming up.
* Jelousy towards Garner etc's nice tft's.
* Having to travel on train, which is a problem with a 19" CRT..
I am looking for a 17" or 19" tft (go for 19" as a preference).
I play alot of games and I do alot of programming and graphics. Though good response and low remanance is the first priority, good colour, a reasonably low black point and good contrast is obviously desirable as well.
Is there alot of difference between DSUB and DVI on tfts now? i remember the timing circuits for some older dsub tft monitors being a be on the poor side and giving a bit of 'vibration' on the screen. |

I wouldn't recommend anything but DVI for gaming. I can look up Max PC's top gaming LCD's if you want me to.
Rule #1, you get what you pay for. My $200 17" is great for most things except gaming and this website (the fonts show up all fuzzy and unreadable) |

I am in the same boat as you Cyrus... I have fallen in love with a 23 inch widescreen TFT jobby, currently I am on a 20 inch DELL CRT Flat-screen montior that's just great, but you need a spare room just to accommodate it!
What sort of refresh rate and response time should we be looking at in a good TFT / LCD monitor???
Is there anything else that needs to be taken into account? Considering the monitor will be used primarily for gaming... |

Ok, my TFT you've seen, so you know what it looks like and how godly it is compared to a CRT
It has inputs for both DVI and the old DSUB... and to be honest I cant tell the difference between the two... but then the only way to compare would be to have two side by side with one using each type. As I currently only have the one TFT (plans for the second are on hold until I've finished spending far too much on airsoft... )
However if you believe the reviews/tech boffins.. DVI is the only way to go. My video card is dual DVI so I use DVI for both my monitors.
As Nitro said, you get what you pay for. The 'el cheapo' 17" TFT's were half the cost of this one. Using one of those at work I can tell you that the difference is WELL worth spending a the extra cash on.
2 things to really remember on TFT's...
1
Response time. The smaller the number the better.
I cant remember Madmorning's TFT response time but its a 4 year old Dell that was top of the range back then and handles all games perfectly. Any TFT these days therefore should be fine for gaming (unless you go really really cheap...)
MSM's is 12ms and mine is 8ms, both with absolutely no ghosting whatsoever. The ones at work are 25ms and have only a slight ghosting effect... I'd recommend at most therefore 16ms to be on the safe side.
2
Contrast Ratio.
Always expressed as something like 500:1
The bigger the first number the better the colour contrast of the monitor. Bigger is better.
Budget monitors are less than 500:1, eg 400:1 or in 'el cheapo' land, even as bad as 350:1.
Average Monitors are around the 500:1 mark... while the really good monitors are 600:1 or greater.
As you've seen a few TFT's - I've no idea what Mad's/MSM's contrast ratios were... you'll have to ask them. Mine is 700:1 and a steal at a mere £185 (estimate about USD $280?)

True... but I'd be willing to bet that the actual retail price over there is closer to $280.
The exchange rate has been crazy for the last few years. |

Quoting cyrus5 | I am looking for a 17" or 19" tft (go for 19" as a preference). |
17" TFT != 17" CRT
A 17" TFT is more like an 18" CRT in equivalent size. My 17" TFT has an inch in both vertical and horizontal size over my 17" CRT.
Ignore the lopsidedness of the rushed pic... but you get the idea...

Ok... I'm going off the research I did when I bought mine about 8 weeks ago. I dont know what the contrast ratio of the TFT's at work are so I cant comment on anything with certainty other than 700:1.
That monitor has 16ms response time and contrast ratio of 400:1
Contrast ratio is a little low, some colours can start to look washed out at 400:1 and lower apparently. I'd look for 500:1 in a monitor personally.
16ms is ok. |
