Welcome!
Post 1 / 4

Dumb question. I am just trying to play in a server when I start a dedicated server. Once I start it, I can't play in it. Don't know what I am doing wrong. Any ideas would be cool.

Hmm.. you are trying to use the same port for hosting and gaming?!?!?!? Anyways... people claim they can host a dedi and play on it with the same PC.. but.. It never works for a lot of people... hmm... try getting another PC... and then come back for more!

Running a dedicated and playing it with one PC
(Windows XP - not Windows 98 or ME)

*********If you are using 1 PC then do the following:

Bear in mind that if you are going to run a dedicated server and play on the
same machine then it defeats the purpose of running a dedicated server in
the first place.

Nevertheless, if that's what you want to do then here is how you do it.

If you are using Windows XP (not Windows 98 or ME!!!)
Then do this:
Start RF ServerAssist.
Make sure that Messaging is off.
Type 7756 in the "Force Port" box at the bottom left.
Start the server and then minimise the dedicated server console window and
RF ServerAssist.

Then start your RedFaction.exe (not rf.exe) and in the "Setup-->Network" set
the port to 7755.
Click Play and see if you can get a server list.
Click "Add Server" and type "127.0.0.1:7756"
You should see your server in the list.

**BTW There is a modified version of RF ServerAssist4 at www.hermitware.com that fixes a problem with trying to change to a map that has { or } in it, such as the {DVL} maps.
One of the {DVL} people emailed me about this problem and although I haven't time to spare at the moment, I did fix this small problem.

**Note - In the previous version the server will still run the map. It's just that you can't change to it while the server is running.

(I think I covered everything. )

Cheers
Hermit

I found this in my archives!

O...k lol

Does it mean's that the dedicated server as no real big advantage? For exemple, more game stability over internet or have additional command in the console...

To be able to leave this server on without having a player(yourself if it's a non-dedicated server) in the game. To run a non-dedicated server does give you a slight advantage over a dedicated, so I heard. Back when I first started running a non-dedicated server, some people would say that it was almost impossible to frag me, but those were mostly people with above 200 ping. When I decided to build my own computer, I then decided to run a dedicated server. It lessens the lag(IMO). If you run a server and play in it, it means that your computer is doing double the work. It has to render the graphics on your PC and send and received information from other player. All that takes processing speed away from the server. If you can, run a dedicated server. If you can't run a regular server. I just find it a lot easier to kick players when it's a dedicated server. I mean kick not ban. Banning is easy now with Lazy Ban 120 by SubZ.

Thx for the info...

I have another question for you NoClanFrank;

I launch my Xmod with "LazyBan 130", because i hear that is a anti-cheat... It is the best thing to prevent "modder hack"?

That is one good way of doing it, but the problem is that unless the players start the game using LazyBan 130 then they won't even see your server. All they will see is 1.20v server, which is a shame. I for one wished that everybody knew about it and used it but since they don't I would say stick with LazyBan 120.
Note: Using LazyBan 130 allows you to see all current versions of the game and you can even join those few that still play in 1.0, but I have to warn you about doing that if you don't like cheaters, they are on those server like flies on, well you know, the "S" word.

It works for me but it lags (my frame per second colapses). My CPU doesn't handle two RF games in the meantime quite well.

Other than making the file size larger. You also have to remember that even though you include it on the file, that doesn't mean people will use it. I for one wished that everybody used it. But since they don't, when I do run a server from time to time, it is using LazyBan 120 which is included in RF ServerAssist4 (updated). Anybody running a dedicated server should really use this program as it offers a lot of great features that others don't.

I dont have 2 cpu and for the reason you mention before, i will continu to use listen server. Anyway, i want to be close of my futur Xmod community

What LazyBan do exactly?

1- It just ban/kick player more easier or have also a real protection from "modder hack"? Why not just use the RF 120?...

2- LazyBan130 is supposed to be better than 120?

Description say;

This file gives you the ability to see all English versions of servers (1.0, 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3).

Thx

if the server is running lazyban rather than RF, then all new player entering will have their ui.vpp checked (but maybe that's an option of RF 1.3... ) and if it's not the default one, players won't enter. Running lazyban on client side just allows entering lazyban servers.

... prolly.
I've never heard about lazyban 1.2 (about RF 1.2 yes but lazyban 120 never). It seems it's recomended to install RF 1.3 before running lazyban to be able to prevent any modifications in the UI.vpp of entering players)

For sure, RF 130 have the "modder hack" protection, but i cannot start a listen server on master server (rf.thqmultiplay.net).

I need more info about LazyBan "modder hack" protection;

- It have 1 and is on by default, or is just RF 130?

I will continu this topic on "Xmod - Best and secure way to have fun!"
