I have made a crazy single player world that you can go in multiple directions to new maps and areas. It means in each map I have about 4 or 5 loadlevel events and not just only 2 as the game has in moving from just A-B and move basically forward in one direction...
CAN you actually get the Red editor to play movie files? AVI, BIK, MPEG, ect.. I can only see stuff here to only create cut scenes inside the game using camera positioning and pathnodes, but I can't see anything in the events to support playing actual mpeg or AVI movies, I thought VCLIP event was for playing movies, I must be looking in the wrong place, does someone know? But this seems to be only for sounds.
For The "Displayscreen event." I got that one working. But if I use a small TGA size to save file space, but then your font or pic then balloons to ugly monster size instead of displaying the small size and keeping detail fine, it turns all blocky and pixilized instead. To stop the pixilizing, I have to use hi-res file like 1028=728 or something just to get a good effect and that means much BIGGER file sizes and bigger VPP's.
What are the limitations on Red concerning how many brushes and items can be allowed in a mover? I tried to make water rise in a computer room, I got that effect going ok but but some of my computers and pipes and valves and lights inside the room all rose up into the air instead of going down with the room !! Was everything in the room all selected? Yes. But even though I had everything selected, only half the items wer recognized as a newly created keyframe. There's something wrong with this program...
I read of a guy whose tearing his hair out now in frustration because he can't load his map into his red and spent hours creating his map but as soon as he loads it into the editor the program crashes and he can't edit his map.
Usually three things I can think of cause will Red to crash upon loading and they are:
a) Big huge nasty maps (or in other words
maps that have NO PORTALS in em)
b) Certain texture or textures hidden somewhere
in the map that has been sized down so ridicuously
small that red simply can't handle trying to draw
out all the detail and crashes.
c) Overdoing the detail on brushes using the
Pinwheel and Mesh Smooth functions in face
or brush mode. Too much of this on a given
face can crash the map.
There are probably more ways than I can think of
but those are the main ones. |

You can make big maps without portals, and still have no lag in them. It is all about the way you build your brushes. On the other hand, RED was never made to handle complex brushwork. If you want to make complex maps, and specially outdoor maps, move on to UnrealEditor or Radiant |
A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools. |

Lace is right about portals, I've had some other weird things happen to me because of open maps with not many portals, Ill mention one, rapid fire shotgun without a mod... |
OPEN SOURCE = GOOD

I wouldn't recommend building big maps with no portals, you'll probably get away with it only if your face count is low otherwise you're asking for trouble later on.
For the guy screaming because his map won't load
into Red... I once had a map that crashed as soon
as it tried loading itself into the editor, so I
turned off all textures and lightmaps and rendering
and just loaded my level in wireframe brush mode, it
loaded it, I deleted the offending brushes and texture
causing the crash and had no trouble since.
Can someone who is more experienced on Red tell me why some objects and items dissapear when you turn them into a keyframe mover group?
Even after red has selected everything to be turned into a keyframe?
Now my original question I want to know is, can you get Red editor to play movie files, (BIK, AVI, MPEG) video scenes? Or does it only allow cutscences within the game to be made?
RED, WHERE ARE MY CUSTOM TEXTURES?
I've done what Red asked me to do, put my custom textures (tga) in c:\RedFaction\User_Maps\Textures but for some strange reason Red is not showing me the CUSTOM textures folder under the Textures menu in the Red editor so I can't even access my custom textures.
Does that mean I have to reinstall the game ? |

Make sure your texture are TGA and therefore end with the .tga suffixe. |
