Maybe its just way too complex Ive had this certain problem happen to me before when I had too much brushwork in my map. Try adding portals if that doesnt work then I dont know what else to say |

If you have a packfile you could always try extracting the rfl from it. Otherwise... start again
Why vertex edit a cylinder though? |

im making a fountain, i made like a dome in the middle to simulate like those water fountin things they have at malls, and then i put a scrolling water texture on it. |

Yeah starting all over would be a good enough suggestion, I remember when I first learned how to vertex and I just went crazy with it and I encountered the same problem you have now The level Im making is getting kinda complex though about 557 brushes and 31 portals to help stabilize those brushes so red wont crash, so always make sure to add portals before that happens! |

RED's stability depends on your system basically. Take for example IAC's graveyard map for RFU4. He is on an Alienware with a GeForce 6800GT vid card, so that vid card can render much faster than others. I tried playing his map on my eMachines with integrated 64MB integrated video and within every half a sec I would skip. I got no gameplay in it. I had pc lag like a b**** |

Try using face mode instead, it causes fewer holes and is much easier to manage than vert mode, in the long run you also end up with fewer faces =>level runs faster on low end machines |

i had forgotten that i had sent a copy of the map to my friend beforer i did this, so i got him to send me it back, ill have to compromize, im not making a dome becase it crashes, im making pyramid shapes, less realistic, but easyer on faces and verticies |

before opening your map,go in view and check:
- show everything see through
- render nothing.
And reduce the free look window as small as you can.
Then load the map, select a few brushes (those whose vertices you had edited or any of them) and press H to hide them (you'll be able to unhide them pressing alt H). That should be OK for some time.
Next time do several saves all along your map and keep several versions of that map at various level of achievement. |

umm i didn't read some of the replies cuz i'm lazy so idk if this was already said. if u made a vpp of the map open it up, there may be a texture name too long. or u may have a 0kb texture file,if the editor opens but crashes when u move try going view>>render everything. maybe there are too many brushes and things and you haven't portalled anything. if the editor doesn't crash upon opening then render like i said and make some things detailed. or u could use the method a lot of ppl use and find very effective. |

*Cough* Ultra *cough*
Anyway I play that map on my laptop and it has an integrated 64mb card and the map runs fine... The only time it lags is when I host a Dedicated server on the laptop then play that map and join the server on the laptop... but hosting a non dedi with the map on laptop and playing it or join a server playing it, it runs fine...
What I do, if I get an instant crash when I open a map, is I open RED then before I open the map, I go to view then Render Everything or Render Nothing, like molo and blaze said, both ways seam to work but with render everything you can see the map insted of just wireframes. Then I open the map and add a few giant portals. Even though the portals face each other, looking through both dont seam to cause the HOM affect like some people say, so add a few then build and go back to view>>>render using portals (like in-game) and see if it crashes, and if it doesn't then build again, and if it still doesn't then you should be good to go. |

If you do not have a backup of the level stored somewhere, or in a vpp, forget about it. There is no way to open it again. I have had this happen to me many times, the reason it takes me so damn long to release one lol. Speaking of which I uploaded a new one called Unity Station, should be up soon...
Anyway, if there are no backups, sorry about your map. |

DAMN IT IAC! lol
My bad, GeForce 6800Ultra. Point is if I try and play it on a computer with integrated gfx it lags every half a sec. Yet if I play it on a pc with an ATi Radeon 9600XT it plays fine, then when I play it on my pc with a GeForce 6600GT it plays fine....... I have seen this in not only IAC's map but a lot of others as well that seem to affect low end vid cards. |
