Well i keep getting a problem every now and then with my hdd and a couple days ago it just wouldn't start. It starts off okay ,but then every once in a while I turn on the computer and then the hdd light flickers and just stops loadin the windows does anybody know any programs or solutions to this. And i still using the HDD but last Wednesday it just like stopped workin and just came back today. . .
What really happens is when i turn on the computer when the HDD stops doing anything you don't see the windows on at all.

How old is the drive and what make is it? If it`s a Maxtor they have a diagnostic proggy on there website. It sounds to me like the drive isn`t spinning up. Power supply ok? Make sure it`s the first bootable drive in the BIOS too.

Programs/Software do not fix hardware issues.

Make sure the power cables to the drives are securely in place. If they are then it could be your power supply or the drive on its way out. Backup any important data that you have on it to be safe.

Assuming that as your old drive was 3 years old you've probably got ATA133 in your machine not SATA150 so that drive you suggested should be ok... best to check to make sure you've not got SATA however.

Harddrive recommendations differ from person to person depending on what drives have failed on them

However anyone will tell you, anything with an IBM or Hitachi (same thing) logo on it is more likely to destroy itself than reach its first birthday

I personally like Seagate or Maxtor (Garners HDD Flavours of the Year)
I've had a Seagate Barracuda for longer than I can remember in this machine. Its a 40Gb ATA133 thats seen secondary drives made by Western Digital, IBM and Maxtor come and go as one by one they've failed...

The Maxtor failure I've had was heat related, couldn't blame the thing for melting. Much...

In addition to my Seagate I've got 2 Maxtor DiamondMax SATA drives in RAID 0. Both are good fast drives. No complaints.

As for price, no idea... have to ask someone more in touch with HDD prices in USD.

I have a Western Digital, and it's not failed me yet.

Although, saying that, I did get a boot error once. My dad fixed it by running CHKDSK on it. It seemed there was some index errors caused by me shutting down the pc straight away *hold the power button down for 10 seconds or so* while a program was running. Championship Manager 4.

But other than that, it hasn't done anything wrong, and WD's are famed for their HD making technology....

Man, i NEVER had a HD fail on me yet. I consider myself lucky ... or maybe possibly because i don't use it long enough to crash on me the oldest HD im still using is on my dual athlon, and its about 3 yrs old.

I agree with these guys though sounds like a dead HD ... Ive got a HD laying on my floor to replace the old HD if you want one
