That patcher doesn't change anything in windows, it just removes the bug with RF itself.
I map stuff. Sometimes.

I have a quad core AMD with 2 9800GTX's in SLI, I dont get any of these problems. even the 8800 problem does not come up on plain un-patched RF on my rig. only issues i have ever had is with the 177 and up series drivers. goes to say newer/bigger is not necessarily better.

windows vista home premium
intel(R) core (tm)2 quad cpu q6600 @2.40ghz
4.gb ram and a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT

lol plz help me i wanna play sooooo bad

4 gig of ram <<<< theres ya problem you need to limit you memory virtually. Go to run, type msconfig, go to boot tab and click advanced options, check maximum memory and set to 3072.
click ok ans follow the rest. reboot and play

Still curious to see if this actually works ...

I have done many tests and bench marks and found that limiting the ram this way has absolutely no effect on performance. Using 3d mark06 pro, 3D mark vantage, prime and sandra. The scores were exactly the same. This does not limit or effect the way RAM modules are addressed read and written too. only the amount of data that vista can accumulate to be sent or read from the ram.
At most with every thing running I can only use 1.7 Gigs of ram, which is far short of the 3 Gig limit..

In fact a lot of programs still recognize the full 4 gigs including Vista it self.

Hey, thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, Assaultman67's solution did not work. However, thanks to his post I knew what to look for and have found a solution that works 100%, tested by me on the system I mentioned before as shown here. I found the solution at the AVSIM Forums.

To set the processor affinity to core 0 (or 1) in Red Faction, take the following steps:

1. Make sure you have a copy of the imagecfg affinity mask tool; imagecfg.exe. Save it to your c:windowssystem32 directory.

2. Make a backup copy of rf.exe (located by default in c:gamesredfaction)This is as simple as right-clicking on rf.exe and selecting "copy" then again right clicking on your desktop and selecting "paste."

3. Click Start>Run and type "cmd" A command prompt window will open.

4. At the command prompt type the following exactly:
Quoting code
imagecfg -a 0x1 c:gamesredfactionrf.exe
and then press enter. This sets rf.exe to run using core 0. To use core 1 instead simply substitute "0x1" for "0x2".

5. After you see "Process Affinity Mask: 00000001" (or 00000002) type "exit" and press enter.

Red Faction will now work perfectly.

With THIS solution, you can just click your normal Red Faction shortcuts and use the Red Faction Launcher.

I am assuming that the default directory was used when Red Faction was installed.. if it wasn't you have to change the code to match your directory.

It should also be noted that if you run LazyBan then you need to do the same to the file LazyBan130.exe. Also, if you run mods such as the Hive Mod you need to do the same to their executables as well. (hive.exe for Hive.)

Thanks again to Assaultman67 for pointing me in the right direction. Now I have no fear up upgrading to dual core.

Hi there,

Is this still the best option for me if I don't want to use the PF option?

My current rig is:

Gigabyte GA-EG41M-S2H
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400
ATI Radeon HD 4670
Kingston DDR2 800 2 Giga

My problems are:

- All the other players looks like they are warping everywhere in the game? Am I warping too?

- I cannot see through some of the walls with the rail gun (while scanning) but the Nvidia's can?

And if this is still the best fix for me without going PF then where can I get a copy of imagecfg.exe ( the above link for this don't work no more )

Thanks in advance!

Maybe I'll field this question;

This is a good fix for alot of machines, but not all. My original post was back in August 2006, when alot of new computers were still running Windows XP. If you want to try imagecfg, I included it with the dual core fix that I submitted to l4y back then. The fix includes already patched exe files for RF, lazyban and hive, that I made using imagecfg, and there is a detailed set of instructions to help you along. Alternatively, I have since found that Crystal Faction makes Red Faction work on almost any machine I've tried it on, so if using imagecfg doesn't do it for ya, I would recommend that! Hope that helps!

None of those work for me but guess what..??
I got it playing normally now by simply going into properties of rf.exe and setting the Compatibility to Windows 98 / Windows Me option!! I'm using Win XP SP3
Try it with other options there and let me know which is better..
Cheers!
